Happiness, Hope, and Humor - Three Simple H's That Will Change Your Life
If you were a parent, grandparent, or small child during the past forty years, Sesame Street was probably a large part of your routine. Intentionally or sub-consciously, we all sang along, played along, learned along. Sesame Street was a constantly changing show. New faces, new Muppets, new themes - but one segment was guaranteed. At some point, someone would come forward and say "Today's show is brought to you by the Letter ____." Bert and Ernie would sing a song about the letter, or it would rise, gigantic, out of a pool filled with children. Regardless of the set-up, the moral was the same: one little letter can change your life. And, as it most often is, Sesame Street was correct. Focusing on, singing about, celebrating the letter "H" can change your life. As Ernie would say, "Think of all the lovely words that start with 'H.'" Today and every day are brought to you by happiness, hope, and humor.
Happiness has many definitions. Happiness is one of the "Big Six" emotions, according to many theorists (also: surprise, fear, disgust, anger, and sadness.) To the hedonists, happiness is simply the maximization of positive sensory input. Yet, according to cognitive therapists like Arnold A. Lazarus, happiness results from "making reasonable progress towards the realization of a goal." Happiness is thought to be physically caused by high concentrations of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in the brain, also attributed to waves of euphoria. Recent studies show that one's coping mechanisms can increase a person's happiness level, as can feelings of pride and self-efficacy.
Humorous Portrayal of Bad Values - A Review of the Adventures of Captain Underpants, by Dav Pilkey
George Beard and Harold Hutchins, the main characters of The Adventures of Captain Underpants, are pranksters of the first order. In this installment of Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series, George and Harold pull an outrageous set of pranks at their elementary school football game. However, unbeknown to them their mean principal Mr. Krupp has caught all of their antics on videotape and he proceeds to use the tape to blackmail them into behaving well in school and serving his every whim.
After a few days of following Mr. Krupp's rules, the boys remember a comic-book advertisement for a "3-D Hypno-Ring" that will allow them to hypnotize Mr. Krupp and lay hands on the incriminating videotape. George and Harold follow through with their plan, and in the process have some fun with Mr. Krupp, making him believe he is Captain Underpants--George and Harold's favorite superhero in their homemade comic books--while he is under their hypnotic spell. Silly high jinks ensue.
This book has tremendous subjective appeal: kids will love it (mine do...). The chief thing that makes it appealing is humor. For example, Pilkey's turn of phrase itself is often hilarious. In the introductory chapter he describes George and Harold as kids who were "usually responsible...Whenever anything bad happened, George and Harold were usually responsible." Kids will also think the fantastic nature and scale of the boys' pranks is funny. For example, they put black pepper in the cheerleaders' pom-poms causing the cheerleaders to sneeze uncontrollably, they put bubble bath in the marching band's horns so the band's playing just ends up blowing bubbles, and they replace the football team's muscle rub lotion with "Mr. Prankster's Extra-Scratchy Itching Cream." And of course the potty-humor theme throughout the book appeals to a child's (seemingly natural, if my kids are any indication) proclivity for all things potty'ish.
The Girl Next Door by Brad Parks - Newspapers, Murder, and Bears! Oh My! - Mystery Book Review
Award-winning mystery writer, Brad Parks, returns with his third book, The Girl Next Door, featuring amateur sleuth and newspaper reporter, Carter Ross.
Nancy Marino was forty-two-years-old and single. She waitressed at the State Street Grill, delivered Bloomfield, New Jersey's Eagle-Examiner early mornings; and was a shop steward for the International Federation of Information Workers (IFIW), Local 117.
On a hot, Friday morning in July, a speeding Cadillac Escalade struck and killed her while delivering her papers. The driver disappeared onto the Garden State Parkway; confident he committed an untraceable crime.
Enter Carter Ross, an eight-year veteran news reporter for the Eagle-Examiner. Reading Marino's obituary, he decides to memorialize a fellow newspaper employee, even though he'd never met her. He plans to write a story portraying Marino as an ordinary person, who spent her life serving others, and, whose contributions to society went unnoticed until her passing. Attending her funeral, he learns that her death is being investigated as a homicide, which ignites his inquiring mind.
Ross is an unpretentious thirty-two-year-old. Educated at Amherst College, he lives in a two-bedroom, ranch-style house with his black-and-white, domestic, shorthaired cat, Deadline. He ubiquitously dresses in Khakis and button-down shirts; and drives a five-year-old Chevy Malibu.
Using Hi-Lo Books With Struggling Readers and ESL Students
A hi-lo book is a title that offers highly interesting subject matter at a relatively low reading level. Publishers take different approaches to producing and defining these books in their product line. Some produce books which have a large gap between the age of the intended reader and the reading level; others are one or two grade levels below the expected reading level. The concept behind a hi-lo book is to encourage struggling readers or readers who are learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Readers are more likely to try a book which is about a topic of great interest to them especially if it has features designed to make it easier to read.
The high interest is generated by subject matter that appeals to readers in a particular age range. The content is what readers would read on their own without any input from adults. Readers aged 10 to 13 are often interested in sports, adventure, animals, humor, mystery, magical or fairy tales, and natural disasters. Teen readers are often interested in tough, realistic circumstances like bullying, suicide, teen pregnancy, sexuality, and drug use. They also enjoy science fiction, fantasy, adventure, graphic novels, comics, and Manga, the Japanese version of comics. Hi-lo books are like any good book with a compelling story line and fascinating facts.
The Everyday Housewife - By, Bryan Foreman - Book Review
What does an Oklahoma City housewife and mother of two teenagers have in common with a New York City feminist author, drug user, murderer, and Mafia accomplice? When you find out, you'll be as impressed with "The Everyday Housewife: Murder, Drugs, and Ironing" by Bryan Foreman as I was. Foreman wrote an iUniverse Editor's Choice award winning, out-of-the-box literary novel going far beyond just being called creative. In fact, the old adage about not judging a book by its cover actually set the bar high for me as I adored his choice of cover art, graphics and comic overtone. "Wow," and "Over-the-top" is all I can say about his work - a definite home run piece of wordsmithing genius.
"The Everyday Housewife" truly is a multi-dimensional novel, as Bryan Foreman created his character, Katharine Beaumont as being an author herself. He brings her writing within his novel, creating a "book within a book," so to speak. Then Foreman interleaves Katharine's thoughts, her morals, her steadfast fortitude and uniquely individual decision making reasoning into ancillary tangents within his story, creating a reading experience guaranteed to entertain and inveigle the most sophisticated of audiences into overwhelming accolades of praise. As for the details of the storyline, perhaps those are best left undisclosed; however the sequence of events, the people of New York City, their attitude and personalities are cleverly depicted with terse and focused character development, credible circumstances, and enjoyable moments of interaction. The book moves along at lightning speed, with a contemporary stylized attitude of a maternally mature woman acting out what can be called childish behavior; however it is postured as being understandable and even justified. These remarks may be considered "riddles" to some reading this review, but it is for your own enjoyment to read this book with an impressionable mind, not knowing the synopsis.

Stress Relief Through Humor - How it Works
You have heard the catch phrase "laughter, the best medicine for stress". The experts say that a good sense of humor can mentally lighten up your load and cure ailments, but add in a good laugh and it actually activates physical changes in your body. Lets see how and why this works.
Short Term Benefits Sooth stomach tension from stress. By activating better circulation and easing digestion, laughter relieves some stomach tensions due to stress.
Oxygen for your organs. By laughing, your intake of oxygen is multiplied thus stimulating your heart, lungs and muscles. In turn this increases the release of a pain relieving hormone from your brain called endorphins. Endorphins also affect emotions.
Stress response. Laughter increases your heart rate and and blood pressure and heats up and cools down your stress response. Like a good workout the results will leave you in a calm, relaxed state.
Longer Term Benefits Healthier immune system Having positive thoughts your body actually releases Neuropeptides to help fight stress that weaken your immune system and potentially more-serious illnesses. On the reverse, negative thoughts turn into chemical reactions that impact your body with more stress and reduced immunity, which leave you open for more ailments.
Comics 101 - What is the Comics Code Authority?
The Comics Code Authority is a self-regulatory body that governs content in comic books.
In 1954, psychologist Frederic Wertham published Seduction of the Innocent, a scathing book discussing how the media in general and comic books in particular corrupt young minds. The book was such a sensation that it catapulted Wertham into celebrity, and the US Congress convened the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency to address the issues brought up in the book. The primary target for both Wertham and the Senate was EC Comics' horror and crime titles. EC had established a strong niche for itself in the industry for publishing what would be considered "mature" titles today. But since comic books at the time were considered solely as children's entertainment, Wertham considered EC Comics as especially dangerous for children.
In a proactive move, EC Comics publisher William Gaines gathered together the other comic book publishers and suggested they create their own governing body to regulate content, in order to not be officially censored by the government. In an ironic twist, the body that was formed, the Comics Code Authority, created guidelines that were so strictly enforced that EC Comics was not able to publish the kinds of comics they specialized in. Gaines and EC Comics were all but forced out of the comic book business. Their final title, MAD, switched to a magazine format to bypass the restrictions of the Comics Code Authority. It has been in continuous publication since 1952.
Humor in the Classroom: 4 Ways to Engage Even If You Are Not Funny
Today's generation of student has been granted thousands of satellite channels, iPods, iPhones, video games, and millions of websites to surf at their leisure (or in the back of your class). All of these items are the competition of every faculty member attempting to GRAB HOLD of the attention of the A.D.D. students of today.
Alas, here are a few great tips for faculty to incorporate humor to better engage today's generation of students (even if you don't think you're that funny):
You can easily locate funny jokes, cartoons, blogs, and pictures relating to your field or subject through using Google and Google Images. Simply search under keywords such as "biology humor," "accounting jokes," or "funny marketing", and you can stockpile weeks of material at your fingertips. This same search can also be used for YouTube video clips, which has seemingly captured every funny moment in the history of mankind (or, at least, their mankind).
Sick Puppy by Carl Hiaasen - Book Review
Irresistibly irreverent. The title of Carl Hiaasen's novel Sick Puppy, says it all really. Having just come from reading some dystopian fiction, this novel's black humour was a real 'cleansing of the palate' for me. While black humour is not everyone's cup of tea, I think Carl Hiaasen does in his novels what we all wish we could do in everyday life once in a while - say what we really think, politically correct or otherwise! In Sick Puppy, Hiaasen's main character is an eco-enthusiast (or eco-terrorist, depending on your one's point of view) who has a short fuse when it comes to litterbugs. He sees it as his duty to teach the ignorant and narcissistic of society a lesson. When Spree crosses paths with Palmer Stoat, a self-absorbed political fixer, teaching a litterbug a lesson soon turns into an adventure of grand and comical proportions. While the title Sick Puppy is a euphemism for many of the outrageous characters introduced to the reader in the story, the tale does actually feature a Labrador named Boodle who becomes ill. How does the dog become ill you might ask? You'll just have to read the story for yourself to find out...
While this novel is very accessible, don't be fooled into thinking the story itself is simple or lacking message. I was impressed to find a complex web of characters and story lines that drew me in and really made me think. Everything that happens in the story happens for a reason, no matter how innocuous. While this story is taken to the extreme for comical effect, as with any black comedy, it reflects and spotlights the human character traits that we all observe, but in this politically correct world we live in, seldom acknowledge. I enjoyed this book immensely, and highly recommend it for those needing a cathartic laugh after a long day at work.

International Perspective on Humor
United States public speaking audiences are becoming more and more diverse. It is your responsibility as a public speaker to be aware of and acknowledge significant portions of the audience that come from differing backgrounds. If you are speaking in a different country, again, it is up to you to find out about local customs and types of humor that are appreciated in that locale. The response to humor is quite different for different cultures. Paying close attention to this fact will give you a greater chance of connecting with international audiences in and out of the U.S. You will also be more aware of etiquette and customs that will make you a welcome speaker anywhere you go.
If you are not familiar with your intended audience, in your pre- program research you might ask, 'How diverse is your group? Or do you have members from other countries?' The answers to these questions will help you plan your strategy for connecting with a particular audience.
I was doing my planning for a speech in Baltimore, Maryland and found out that twenty-five percent of the audience was Asian Indian. I knew nothing about the Indian culture and didn't have long to plan. What I did know was the Dunkin' Donut store near my home was owned and run by Indians. That was a good excuse to stop in, down a few eclairs, and do some research. I told the proprietor what I was trying to accomplish and he was glad to help. Out of all the information he gave me about humor in India, I only used one line. That was all it took to connect. The line was, 'I want to tell all my new Indian friends I'm sorry Johnny Lever couldn't make it.' Johnny Lever was one of the top comedians in India. They lit up and I went on with the program.
Book Review - Publish This Book by Stephen Markley
While searching the Internet for publishers, I recently stumbled upon an interesting book promotion by SourceBooks in Naperville, Illinois. Their promotion is for a book entitled, "Publish This Book" by Stephen Markley. They are offering a free critique for up to 5000 words of a manuscript when you purchase the book. I thought it would be worth the $10 (after the 35% discount) to purchase the book which appeared to address a topic of interest for me while meeting the promotional requirements allowing me to submit a portion of my manuscript for a fiction novel. So, I bought the book and obtained the required proof of purchase.
I looked at the cover art for Markley's book and I chuckled as it shows a young man holding what appears to be a broken piece of sheetrock with the title of the book, "PUBLISH THIS BOOK", along with the pitch line, "THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUE STORY OF HOW I WROTE, SOLD, AND PUBLISHED THIS VERY BOOK". The young man has torn pieces of paper taped to his jeans with footnotes. His face is obscured by an adequately sized red label with "A Premature Memoir" written on it. I can appreciate good cover design, so I was immediately intrigued enough to give it a few minutes of my time. After all, I paid for the book so I thought I might as well give it a chance.
I began reading this interesting concept book with every intention of putting it down as soon as I reached a point of waning interest. It didn't happen. I found the book interesting, irreverently funny and candid.
Funny Comic Strips - Important Tips
You need to understand fundamentals of funny comic strips, which are created sincerely without any kind of favoritism or narrow prejudices. The main aim should be the presentation of humor for the sake of humor only. It has to be interesting and exciting to catch the attention of readers and they should feel comfortable and pleased with the final effect of the creation. Successful personalities practice the art of creating amusing comic strips to bring humor in life. There are various features in the technique and it takes reasonable time to complete the strip with attributes of humor. Intellect plays a vital role in the creation with the element of timing sense and the capability of presenting matching words, which complement the sketch to produce the desired feeling of humor in readers. The theme is immaterial and an artist of the high caliber can produce humor from almost on any subject because of the nature of vision. It is important how do you look at an incident or at a subject and bring out humor from it. The special vision involves the ability to look at a subject in an incredible way.
If you are interested in creating funny comic strips, you need to use the special vision and create sketches of the incident in the notebook. You should perceive the funny element in the drawing or so to say the lighter side of the subject. Getting tensed with the job would unnecessarily mess up the whole effort and hence, you should maintain a lighter mood when you create sketches of comic art. Maintain the humorous outlook and carry on with the job of creating comic art is the ideal situation, which you should aspire for. Practice involving humorous side of everything or present suitable jokes to strengthen the comic work is some of the major features of the creation.
Books From The Master of Horror and Suspense
Humans do their utmost to avoid being in scary, suspenseful situations, and yet humans built a multimillion publication and entertainment industry based entirely on the scary and the suspenseful. Every year (and this happens not just on Halloween), Hollywood offers us a roster of suspense thrillers, horror mysteries, and other movies in between. Bookstores dedicate whole walls and shelves to the mystical and the spine-tingling.
If you would look closely, you would realize that always present among these shelves is a Stephen King book. Just what is it about horror, suspense, and "the King" have that got people hooked up? Even in video stores, racks reserved for horror movies contain at least one movie adaptation of a Stephen King book. Is it his writing style? His dry humor at times? The witty banters and dialogues? The characters you can easily identify with and relate to, who are ordinary people he placed in extraordinary situations? His frank, straight-to-the-point narrative? Or is it his insane ideas - the way he transforms ordinary things into something macabre and suspicious - that hold readers into his power to entertain, frighten, and terrify?
Stephen King's writing career spans forty years, covering numerous works from the first stories he wrote as a teenager growing up in Maine to his work collaborations and recent publications in the second decade of the 2000s.
Is Christmas Real? The Best Humorous Arguments For Conversation For And Against By A Philosopher
If thinking logically has any possible value, thinking logically about Christmas, an institutionally established holiday, would seem a good thing to do.
Why do we say this? We just do. Whatever Christmas is, people seem to believe in it since they devote so much time to it, and devoting so much time by so many people to something that is not real would seem totally illogical, wouldn't it, if that activity were not real?
Why would anyone give precious time and energy to something that is not real? It would not make sense, would it? We all consider time precious, don't we? Or why else would we keep agendas?
Book Review - Happily Married With Kids
With 25 years of experience in marriage counseling, a husband and two children of her own under her belt, Dr. Carol Ummel Lindquist is an expert when it comes to making a marriage work-with or without kids. Her recent book, Happily Married with Kids is a step-by-step guide to transforming the fantasy of a perfect marriage into a reality.
"The current high standards for parenting lead to low standards for marriage," says Lindquist. "The irony of these contrasting standards is that having a healthy marriage is a great gift for your children and yourself." Her goal is to educate parents, happily married or otherwise, on how to develop and maintain relationships that will benefit their entire family.
In Happily Married with Kids, Lindquist teaches moms and dads to avoid "the real parent trap" of exhaustion and disruption, manage conflicts and improve communication with spouse and children, stay best friends with their spouses, balance work and family, enjoy their kids-and each other-at any age, revive their sex life, find humor in everyday difficulties and make time for themselves and their marriages.
Humor Can Help You On Your Date
Apart from having a decent physical appearance and good looks, girls prefer those men who have a good sense of humor. Usually people tend to feel relaxed whenever they come across anybody with a good sense of humor. Humor also helps in developing an intimate and trustworthy relationship as one finds humorous people confident, attractive, easy to approach and pleasant to converse.
The most convenient manner of developing a humorous attitude is to be in the company of people who are humorous. Usually, one does get influenced by personalities. Apart from this, one can also hang out at the local laughter club. It is easy to influence your date with a good laughter session.
Another good strategy is to have a personal humor library that has a wide collection of humorous and light-hearted books, comics, movies and TV shows that tickle the mind and induce laughter. Regular referencing of your collection is the most appropriate method to get rid of stress and nervousness. Apart from this, any joke or funny situation from these books or movies can be used to ease the tension during your first date as well as to cheer up your partner.
Comic Heroes You Should Be Reading About
Although in today's world there are many different comic books and series to choose from, I find that it is best to read from a few series religiously and then pick up single issues that look interesting on the side. For those series you choose to read all the time, I suggest a subscription to ease the continuous blows to your wallet each week or month. For once in a while reads, keep picking them up at the stands but once you feel yourself looking forward to reading that specific comic a few times in a row, you may want to think subscription.
Okay then, that was the easy part, now here comes the hard part. Which comics should I subscribe to and which are best left on the stands? I'm so glad that you asked. In my opinion the best comics to read are the ones that revolve around your favorite comic heroes. Now that may seem pretty self explanatory but look at the key word favorite. Favorite doesn't mean top twelve, instead I would try and subscribe to your top four heroes. I'm not trying to dissuade you from reading more than four comic series. Quite the opposite, read as many as you'd like, but for your wallets sake, subscribing to the top four isn't a bad idea.
"But I like so many comics! I can't possibly just choose four!" you may say. Well, if it is too hard for you to decide on your own who to read let me show you my top four comic heroes and explain why you should also be reading them.
Tintin Books and the Hollywood Treatment
In 1929, a French cartoon series appeared as a children's supplement in Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle. Very few would have suspected the international success story that would follow. Written and drawn by Belgian artist Herge, the series focused on the adventures of boy reporter Tintin and his faithful sidekick french terrier dog Snowy. The stories revolved around Tintin's globetrotting adventures in the post depression world, with a number of stories drawing upon real world events (such as the moon landings). Tintin's adventures were infused with Hergé's own sense of wonderment, adventure and humor. A colorful cast of supporting characters such as Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus and the Thompson twins rounded out the ensemble. Although Herge may not have known it his beautiful art style and knack for adventure storytelling ensured that on January 10 1929, a star was born.
Tintin books have entertained fans for almost a century now. The series spawned a set of comics (24 in all). Its legacy remains as one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century. It has been translated in over 50 different languages and sold more than 200 million copies.
My earliest memories of Tintin come from reading the comic series as a child in the library. My parents would leave me for hours at a time at the local library while they went grocery shopping and I quickly became familiar with Tintin's adventures. I was immediately drawn to Tintin because I loved the art style of the books and enjoyed the swashbuckling nature of the stories. It reminded me in many ways of the classic serialized adventure stories of Indiana Jones as Tintin seemed to have the same quality of jumping from one inescapable predicament to the next. It was a classic formula of adventure and humor which I always thought would be perfect as a feature motion picture. As the years passed, I stopped reading Tintin as real life took hold. However, recent news of a Tintin movie being produced brought with it a wave of nostalgia.
Interview With a Comic - Carol Leifer, Author Of 'When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win'
One of the comics that I admired for her sharp observational humor is Carol Leifer. Well, Carol just published a very funny book called, "When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win." She writes about embracing her life and her age and her writing is insightful and hilarious.
I just had the great fortune to interview Carol about her life and her new book.
ec. We both grew up on Long Island but we never had any play dates together. Another thing we have in common were fathers who were both naturally very funny. Were you influenced by your father's sense of humor or did you develop your own style?
CL. My father was a huge influence on me. He was an optometrist by trade (and how could he NOT go into that profession with a name like Seymour - SEE MORE? Get it?) but always dreamed of being a comedian. He was the king of the joke tellers and no one told a joke like he did. I was very fascinated by him as a young girl watching him hold court and tell jokes to friends around the neighborhood or at family gatherings. My father also had good taste in comedians. He would always call us kids down to the basement when a great comic was on The Ed Sullivan Show. So comedy was important to the family and I believe it's in your DNA when you grow up like that.
Cartoon Humor Can Tickle Your Funny Bone
Didn't the world seem a lot better during Saturday morning cartoons? There was no school, no troubles and no homework worries as cartoon humor entertained us for hours. All it took was the favorite show, a bowl of corn flakes and a never ending smile. Somehow, the tradition faded in time but if you still like cartoons, you are in luck.
There are so many new options that you would be left confused. You can now enjoy cartoons on television shows, morning newspapers and the internet. Whenever you are lonely or sad, turn on your favorite cartoon and roll away in laughter. Remember that your responsibilities increase as you grow old, but the child inside you does not die. You can always bring that back by reading the morning Garfield strip or checking out the new SpongeBob show.
The comic strip in the newspapers was a favorite for most people as they grew up. What started out as a small strip has grown into a variety of world famous cartoons. You can probably remember Archies and Garfield. Now you can choose between a variety of cartoon strips from Calvin and Hobbes to The Wizard Of Id. If that is not enough, you can also catch your cartoons as television shows on morning channels. What can be better than bugs bunny outsmarting the hunter or the road runner defeating his smart enemies. You would laugh and laugh until you have tears in your eyes. From getting hit with anvils to blasting each other with cannons, it's a dream world of fun and laughter.
Cartooning and Comics in Your Homeschool Curriculum
"How can it help his academics?" a parent might ask. I never asked that question when my two sons would doodle in the margins of their notebooks and school papers. These doodlings just happened and they were a common sight on their papers. They didn't seem to add to or detract from the quality of their schoolwork, so, if nothing else, I would get a little amusement when I looked at their papers.
Some kids like to doodle on their school papers. That's probably a big part of how my oldest son developed and improved his drawing skills over the years. No, he does not do realism art, nor does he aspire to achieve that type of artistic ability. His art is comic style--cartoons--and if I collected his many years' worth of doodlings, we could probably produce quite a funny book of random pictures.
We've heard that we should find out what our child's area of specialization is and let her hone and develop that. If I were tuned in enough to my son's doodlings, maybe I would have recognized his gift earlier. It wasn't until after he created his comic strip, "Carl and Ben...and Beeky," when he was 8 years old, and drew...and drew...and drew...until he had drawings everywhere (under the bed, in the laundry hamper, under the pile of newspapers, on the kitchen table, in the toy box, etc.), that I started wondering if this was more than just a passing fancy. I finally got the cue when he started showing other kids his comic strips, and they thoroughly enjoyed them, that maybe his comics could be shared with a wider circle of kids, like, kids all over the country. And how else could that happen except by publishing his comics?
A Book Review of Captain Underpants and the Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy, Part One
Warning: this book contains lots of disgusting snot, booger, mucus, and drippy, sticky gunk. The title should tip you off: Captain Underpants and the Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy, Part One, by Dav Pilkey. This is the sixth in the Captain Underpants series of graphic novels.
Even if you're a fan of Captain Underpants already, you might not like this if you don't like stories about snot blowing and dripping and flinging and flying. Because that's basically all that happens this time.
You might already know that Harold Hutchins and George Beard are two friends at school who have a knack for getting into trouble. They are budding comic book artists. They write and illustrate their own series of comics featuring a superhero named Captain Underpants.
In reality, they have hypnotized their school principal, Mr. Krupp, to turn into this superhero whenever he hears a finger snap. He strips down to his underwear and a cape and flies off to fight evil, villains, and silly made-up monsters, like the one in this book.
The humor here is mostly based on the grossness of a robot who was crossed with a classmate who sneezed, producing a snot-dripping robotic kid monster thingie. At any rate, if you think kids sneezing and spewing mucous everywhere is funny, you'll love this book.
Funny Comic Strips - Amusement and the Scope of Advertising
A huge section of people enjoys funny comic strips due to the funny nature of characters in the visual presentation. Germany boasts the introduction of this form of art way back in 1865. It contained the story of two boys being continuously rewarded for mischief. Later on, the art was taken up by America followed by many other countries in the world. It is considered the platform of comic books and presently comic serials for television.
The element of amusement is in the storyline, characters and more importantly in the sketch and dialogue. The presenter or creator overcomes the restrictions through speech bubbles and appropriate frame by frame story telling to make it really humorous. Artists and story tellers join hands to produce fantastic comic strips and some of them are immensely popular today. Humor is injected through sketches and speech bubbles to retain the interest of the reader, which reflects the mastery in this subject.
Teenagers are mad about these strips and comic books especially for certain world famous characters. The art has also been incorporated in computer games, which are tremendously popular in teenagers. Some of the gigantic characters such as Superman and Batman and so on are household names and are great hits through movies. The success of the funny comic strips is in the fact that they are simple and easy for a reader to understand. They describe the difference of good and the evil to a teenage mind. The colorful platform of entertainment has a special place in the society in every level of readers due to the simplicity of the form of amusement.
Top-Rated Children's Picture Book About Getting Your Child to Speak
Parents seeking most popular children's picture books will be interested in this. Books open avenues for exploration, amusement, and knowledge for your child. The pages invite different worlds and adventurous experiences into your home and equip your child to enjoy learning. Studies have shown that children who are exposed at an early age to reading do better in school than those who are not exposed. Sharing read-aloud picture books with children helps develop their listening skills, cognitive learning, and improve levels of concentration. It can be the single most valuable tool parents can introduce to their child. Being able to address fears and anxieties through books creates a comfortable environment to help children understand their feelings. Finding the best children's picture books to effectively attend to such issues can be difficult.
Parents who are experiencing issues with a child who is not comfortable speaking know how frustrating it can be. Being shy or unable to properly voice a desire can be equally as frustrating for a child. Many parents do not realize that a great deal of their own attitudes and gestures can significantly attribute to their child's inability to express his desires in words as other children. Recommended by the Newfoundland & Labrador Association of Speech-Language Pathologists & Audiologists, Oliver Has Something to Say! by Pamela Edwards is "a top-rated children's picture book with a humorous and enchanting story to encourage children to speak up" (Montreal Review of Books, Spring 2007). It is one of those children's picture books that will introduce in a comical and laughable way a problem that is very common to many children but difficult to change. Teachable moments are found through the pages of good, quality books.
New Comic Novel on Internet Dating Provides an Unexpected Cathartic Experience
If you haven't tried online dating, you are probably wondering whether it really works, and if you have tried online dating, you probably have enough stories that you could write a book. Well, D.J. Kelley has written that book and it is all and more that you ever could have imagined.
Ten years ago, on 9/11, Chris Osborne's wife left him for another man. Since then, Chris has tried everything possible to find the right woman for him-everything except online dating. Reasoning that his chance of accidentally finding the right woman is less likely than using online dating and its matching methods to select suitable dates, he plunges in full force, finding more women are interested in him than he could have imagined. Chats lead to emails and phone calls, and before he knows it, Chris has several dates lined up.
Although Chris' best friend, Ebby, a rough around the edges New Yorker, tells Chris that online dating is a mistake, Chris forges forward, agreeing to see one woman after the other. The result is a series of hilarious adventures and misadventures, sticky situations, women he would rather only be friends with, cougar women, and of course, at least one stalker.
I found myself completely caught up in the characters and the storyline. I didn't necessarily like all the characters, and at times, I wanted to yell at Chris, "What are you doing?" but I kept reading, cheering Chris on in hopes he would find his soulmate at last, while laughing out loud continuously over the encounters he has with some of the most memorable women in modern fiction.
